The Industry

What's it all about?

The e-commerce industry experience course is all about anchoring academic learning in the context of real-world business situations. The course is designed to provide value and a positve experience for both employers and students. Skills and theory applied to a 'real world' workplace setting provide the opportunity to assess and fine tune career paths for students. What students do within the industry experience course is expected to influence the remaining courses chosen before completion of the degree. Technical skills, e-commerce knowledge and organisation work procedures will be shared between employers and students to solve problems for the host organisation during a typical 12 week placement. You can browse this site from either a student or an employer perspective. Follow the links to gather the information you need to find out more about how the course is implemented.

Information For Students

As part of the degree students must complete an industry experience placement. These placements are a key element of the Electronic Commerce degree and are highly important in the process of securing a graduate job and choosing a career path. The Industry Experience allows students to learn the transferable skills necessary to become an attractive prospect to an employer upon completion of the degree. Students are not expected to find an industry placement without assistance.

The IEC will provide help, guidance and information to assist in finding a suitable placement. However, students may find their own industry placement through any channel as long as it meets the approval of the Industry Experience Coordinator (IEC).

The primary means of communication between the IEC and students will be through e-mail and through this site. Please check the vacancy listing regularly as well as the following pages.

Course guidelines are available through web page links, or they can be accessed through MyWebTM, the award-winning E-learning environment developed by Waikato Management School.

Information For Businesses

Electronic commerce students seek employment for industry experience placements, which they must report on and analyse as part of their degrees. Most students find paid work with a host organisation for 12-14 weeks from mid November to the end of February. Others may find paid work for shorter periods, to a minimum of 4 weeks on-site experience. Companies or organisations with potential projects in the electronic commerce field may benefit by employing an electronic commerce student for a summer industry experience.

Waikato Management School invites businesses and organisations throughout New Zealand and overseas to post a position description on our jobs database for industry experience hosts.

Costs to the organisation is relatively low, but the benefits can be significant:

  • Students have undertaken investigations and projects for New Zealand firms that have added real value to those organisations.

  • If puts sponsors in touch with fresh thinking from students at one of New Zealand's leading business schools.

  • It allows New Zealand firms to tap into the expertise of the Waikato Management School.

  • It offers the chance to utilise skills learnt in e-commerce and computer science courses.

  • It provides an opportunity to "look over" a prospective future full-time employee after graduation.
